Rocks and Rings

This week have Coach Jodie, from Rocks & Rings with us to teach us about the Canadian sport of curling.  Students have learned curling terminology and are practicing sweeping and throwing.  They are also learning that curlers use science and math when playing, as they calculate angles and use friction to help the rocks slide farther on the ice.  Here are a few pictures of our first two days.

Have your child(ren) tell you which team scored and how many points were scored.

Ask your child what the following terms mean:

              • house
              • hammer
              • rock
              • broom
              • button

Ask your child about why a broom is used in curling.

Recorder Karate in Grade 3/4

Grade 3 & 4 students have been working on earning their "belts" for Recorder Karate.  They have even been coming in at lunch to practice and test for belts.  I am posting the songs below so that they can practice over the next week as there will be no music next week due to the Rocks and Rings residency. We will do one more week of Recorder Karate after the residency, and finish on June 14th.

Friday Forecast

It has been a busy month in the music room.  All grades are preparing a short poem or song to present at the Volunteer Tea on Tuesday.  Students in Grade 1/2 are also preparing two pieces to share at their upcoming learning assembly.  These pieces of music represent the learning they are doing about different communities in Canada.  They have discovered that it can be challenging to play one rhythm while singing another rhythm, but have figured out that when they watch and listen to each other, they can get back on track if they lose the beat or rhythm pattern.

Grade 3/4 students have been working on partner songs to perform at the volunteer tea.  Several students have commented that when they listen to each other while both songs are being sung at the same time, they notice their voices blend well and you can hear both songs equally.  We have also added patterned movement to the piece which allows them demonstrate that they can keep the beat while singing and moving.

Next week Grade 3/4 students will start Recorder Karate.  In Recorder Karate students learn various songs that demonstrate different skills such as tonguing and slurring or different registers. Once they have passed off a song, they earn a coloured elastic band to put on their recorder.  Most students have their recorders at school, but if they have it at home, please ensure they bring it for Wednesday the 22nd.  If your grade 3/4 student has recently joined our school, you can purchase a recorder for $5.50. Please send exact change in an envelope or plastic baggie with their name on it.  There are also school recorders that are washed daily that they can borrow.

Students in PLP have been learning about Rondo Form in music.  This is where there are different sections of music performed in the pattern of ABACAD.  They have learned songs and composed different rhythms to play on the boomwhackers to create rondos in class.

Grade 5/6 students have just finished a unit on ukulele.  Students learned how to play six different chords and a few different strumming patterns.  For their final assessment, students had to record a song with at least 2 chords and upload it to IRIS.  Have your child log on to IRIS to show you their video of their playing.

Coming up in music for Grade 5/6, students will be using Garage Band to create a 16 measure song using various tracks, loops and recordings.
